General Sir Isaac Brock rode his horse Alfred into battle, and while Brock was killed, Alfred fled the scene alive. Another soldier then mounted Alfred, rode into battle, and Alfred was killed. Close to 8 million Equines were killed in WW1, there is no definitive answer to the question of how many equines died in WW2. Estimates between 2-5 million.

-Lest We Forget-
Last Chance Horse and Pony Rescue and Sanctuary is a Non-profit Federally Registered Charity that cares for mistreated, injured, surrendered, abandoned horses and ponies. The Rescue offers rehabilitation and long-term care. The Rescue is also a registered sanctuary where the Rescues can live out their lives without the potential of further trauma.
While the exact duration can vary, evidence suggests that horses remember things for years, possibly even decades. It's not just about recognizing old pals; they remember training, good and BAD experiences. Places too! So, it's a long haul with these memory champs. The Rescue is Relentless in the efforts to regain the Rescues trust in Human Kindness.
The rescue animals give back to our community. You will often see us out walking with the Rescues in Crystal Beach, saying hello to people passing by, the ice cream shop (some like ice cream!) and Our Supportive Community.
The Rescues have a full-time support group of Volunteers that focus on daily care and rehabilitation. The Rescue could not function without the dedication of these outstanding individuals. Equine Rescue is HARD. Physically and emotionally draining. It is difficult to deny the bonds created through daily care. Being a Rescuer involves Success and Defeat. We are talking about Lives. They matter, they ALL matter.
Horses contribute significantly to the Canadian economy in several sectors — the agricultural sector, amateur sport sector, entertainment sector (racing and other national / international equestrian sport competition), and the pharmaceutical sector.
Horses are slaughtered in Canada primarily to provide horse meat to European and Asian countries. Horses are brought to slaughter in every possible condition—old, young, sick, healthy, injured, and even pregnant. Overbreeding is the main problem and a large reason why so many horses end up in kill lots. If we can educate our youth, our future, we can hopefully eliminate overpopulation. We would be able to save horses from a tragic end. These animals deserve better and we should be able to give that to them. Considering, Humans are the reason for unnecessary actions.
Our Youth Volunteer Program
encourages Equine Education and interaction with our Therapy Program Participants. The program offers the opportunity to fulfill high-school volunteer hour requirements, while moving forward in their exploration of opportunities in Special Education, Agriculture, Equine Specialties, Community Fundraising, Animal Welfare, Rescue and so much more.
LCHPRS Rescues, visit hospitals, long-term care facilities, retirement homes, and host community groups and individuals addressing personal challenges. Spending time with the rescues helps them and can teach valuable lessons about communication, self-control, and problem-solving. Interacting with the horses and ponies can also improve self-esteem, empathy, connection, direction, a sense of responsibility, and calmness.
